WHAT IS A HORN SECTION FAKEBOOK?
Jazz musicians have relied on Fake Books for ages to provide them with the most important parts of a song (Melody & Chords) to allow them to “fake” or be able to play the song they may not be familiar with. The Horn Section Fake Book serves the same purpose for a horn section player (Tpt, Tbn, Sax, etc) in a commercial or popular music setting.
There are very few jobs available that allows a horn player to be able to make a living playing jazz. The majority of the professional horn players play in what I call a commercial setting…..rock, soul, funk, pop bands. They may play in a show or show band, work on a cruise ship or play the convention circuit. I was fortunate that I have a great ear and grew up around friends who played in rock bands. Most “trained” musicians do not have the constant exposure to popular music. When these same musicians get a call to play in a pop setting they are not familiar with the pop songs. The problem is compounded by the fact that most rhythm section players are not familiar with traditional music notation. They just call a tune and count it off and expect horn section players to automatically know the song!
I have developed the Horn Section Fake Book Series to provide the primary horn part of the most requested songs that a horn player should know in a cover band setting. By primary horn part I mean the part that you might “sing” if you sing along with the horn part in a song. It is not a harmonized part, it is the primary part. If you want complete arrangement’s then look at our Instant Horn Section Series. This is not an instrument specific book. It comes in multiple versions for C, Bb, Eb, and Bass Clef instruments. The Fakebook’s are downloaded in both a two part book and as individual songs. The download includes both PDF and Finale 2014 files so you can edit the parts for your individual needs.
